The 2021 Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Conference will commence next week with education researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers taking part in this annual (100% virtual) event under the theme ‘Social Responsibility within Changing Contexts’. The Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report is joining the crowd, taking part in no fewer than ten events over the five days as detailed in the card below.
On Sunday, we will be hosting an interactive workshop on the GEM Report’s new online monitoring tool Profiles Enhancing Education Reviews (PEER). PEER provides systematic and comprehensive national descriptions of laws and policies on issues central to achieving SDG 4 to promote policy dialogue and peer learning. The session will allow GEM Report researchers to demonstrate how PEER can benefit the international education community and brainstorm future developments of the site to enhance its utility for academics and policy makers alike. There is still time to sign up to the session for those already attending the conference.
On Monday, we will be taking part in an event to present the Report’s most recent policy paper on financing for equity in education and share strategies to prioritize and significantly increase funding for early childhood development. Later in the day we will also be presenting the 2020 GEM Report Inclusion and education: All means all in a session convened by UNESCO’s International Bureau of Education.
On Tuesday, as part of a follow up discussion on The bedrock of inclusion report, a panel will bring the GEM Report together with ActionAid, Education International and Light for the World representatives to discuss obstacles to teacher financing and their ability to deliver disability-inclusive education. In a second session, we will discuss the contributions of non-state actors in South Asia, a key region examined in the forthcoming 2021/2 GEM Report on the same topic as well as its dedicated regional edition. Later that day, we will again be visiting the theme of the 2021/2 GEM Report in a discussion on shadow education patterns in different parts of the world.
On Wednesday, key experts will join the GEM Report team to discuss findings and recommendations from the 2020 Gender Report: a panel will examine 25 years of efforts for gender equality in education and highlight how the gains made risk disappearing unless education responses to the COVID-19 crisis prioritize girls and women.
On Thursday, we will join a panel to offer insights into blogs, an increasingly important communications tool within the education and development community and a key vector for social change. Our final session will unpack the global commitment to inclusive education, anchored by data and policy analysis featured in the 2020 GEM Report.
